By sheer luck, he had gone to pick up his niece from her village the afternoon before a goblin horde attacked it that night. Upon learning that the village had been completely decimated, and that his sister was killed, he adopted his niece, the only remaining member of his family and the only thing left of his sister. However, despite his efforts his niece was devastated and thus became reclusive and very shy; rarely ever leaving the farm.
Five years later Goblin Slayer passes by the farm and Cow Girl discovers he's her childhood friend. After Cow Girl begged her Uncle to let him stay with them, he agrees but says he must pay rent. Although he was at first glad to see his niece happy again, he is soon upset with Goblin Slayer when a couple of days after letting him stay, she had become troubled. He assumed Goblin Slayer had done something inappropriate with her and promptly confronted him. He tells Goblin Slayer that he knows one day she'll get married and possibly move away, but the man who does better be good and ready, to which Goblin Slayer denied that anything of the sort happened. Unable to read his face (which was blocked by his helmet), the Uncle takes his word for it. When he asks Goblin Slayer if he had thought of settling down one day, Goblin Slayer responded "No, there were more goblins to kill." The Uncle realized that Goblin Slayer had gone mad, which is what troubled his niece.
For the next five years he keeps his relationship with Goblin Slayer formal, mostly to a landlord and boarder relationship, as he assumed that Goblin Slayer is only taking advantage of her offer. However after his actions before and after the Battle of the Farm Fields, he comes to realize that Goblin Slayer does indeed care for his niece's well being and does truly see her as a close friend; he was just not good at expressing that. After this, he begins to treat Goblin Slayer with more respect.
